'A Christmas Story' returns to Cleveland's Allen Theatre: Mike Polk Jr. chats with the cast

The stage production is returning to the Allen Theatre this month in all its pink-bunny-suit, glowing-leg-lamp, triple-dog-daring glory.

CLEVELAND — I don't know if you've heard of this under-the-radar holiday picture called "A Christmas Story," but it's starting to get some attention.

In fact, it's found such a foothold in our holiday hearts that it's been adapted into a stage production that ran in Cleveland for many years, taking a five-year hiatus only to return with a vengeance for another run this season.

We all know the original film's Cleveland connection runs deep; much of the production took place right here in 1982. Several Cleveland locations were used, including Higbee's and, most famously, the iconic House from A Christmas Story located on West 11th Street in Tremont.

It's become a Mecca for fans of the film and weirdo Christmas lovers everywhere, and this week, the cast of the Cleveland Play House production took the tour in anticipation of their show's opening.

Following the tour, I had the opportunity to speak with some members of the cast to find out what they thought, and to see if they've been properly getting into character.

'Tis the season once again, folks. Here's to the triumphant return of the best Cleveland holiday tradition outside of Mr. Jingaling and Christmas Ale. "A Christmas Story" is back downtown.

"A Christmas Story" plays at the Allen Theatre from Nov. 30 through Dec. 22. You can find tickets and more information here.
