Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter reduces dog adoption fees to $20 this weekend

The shelter has reached 'critical capacity' after it recently took in more than 25 stray dogs over a span of two days.

CLEVELAND — The Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter, having reached "critical capacity" after taking in more than 25 stray dogs over two days, is slashing dog adoption fees to $20 through the end of the weekend.

Normally $95, the $20 adoption fee covers spay/neuter services, vaccines, a 2024 dog license, microchipping and a current rabies tag, the shelter said. The promotion runs through Sunday, June 9.

The shelter is also waiving most fees for anyone who comes to the shelter to reclaim their lost dog. Those owners will be charged $20, the cost of a dog license.

Administrator Mindy Naticchioni said in a news release that the shelter can hold over 100 dogs, but after taking in nearly a third of its capacity over just two days, the shelter's resources and ability to help more animals are "severely strained."

“We are hoping to reach people who may have had a dog go missing or those wishing to adopt a new pet if not reclaimed by owner,” Naticchioni said.

The Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter is also looking to fill a "critical need" for temporary foster homes for incoming animals. Those who are interested in fostering can email foster@cuyahogacounty.us or stop by the animal shelter during business hours.

The shelter is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays, as well as 12-4 p.m. on Sundays.
