Deadline approaches for 'dog license' purchases says Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter

Licenses purchased after the January 31 deadline will be assessed a $20 penalty fee, effectively doubling the cost.

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio — The Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter reminds all Ohio dog owners that the deadline for purchasing a required license for your dog is fast approaching.

Tuesday, January 31 is the deadline to purchase the licenses without late fees for all dogs aged three months and older. Licenses purchased after the deadline will be assessed a $20 penalty fee, effectively doubling the cost of the license.

These licenses can be purchased in a few different time increments as seen below.

  • one (1) year tag: $20
  • three (3) year tag: $60
  • permanent lifetime tag: $200

Dogs that are lost can easily be returned to their legal owners when wearing a dog license. These licenses trigger longer stray hold times (up to 14 days as opposed to 72 hours) should the lost dog come into a Cuyahoga County shelter.

Dog licenses can be purchased at local Discount Drug Mart stores, Pet Supply Plus stores, at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter location or online at cuyahogadogs.com.

The Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Fees collected from the licenses support the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter providing needed funds to temporarily house stray dogs before they are reunited with their owners or adopted to new homes.
