EUCLID, Ohio — Congratulations are in order for a Euclid-based nonprofit, which just hit a big milestone in its commitment to protecting the health of Northeast Ohio's pet population.
PetFix, which started as a mobile spay and neutering service in 2006, just recorded it's 100,000th surgery last month.
It expanded to a brick-and-mortar building in 2013 where veterinarians and staff oversee about 30 to 50 procedures a day.
Whereas a traditional veterinary hospital could charge several hundred dollars, PetFix charges a fraction of the cost.
"We don't want anybody to have to choose between buying their groceries or paying their rent, and getting their animals spayed or neutered," said Christie Lucco, Executive Director at PetFix.
The clinic charges roughly $25 to $65 for cats, and $75 to $105 for dogs.
Charges may be low, but the quality of care is top-notch, according to Lucco, who points out that PetFix veterinarians focus solely on spaying and neutering.
The clinic also offers low-cost vaccinations, as well as flea and tick prevention, but only to clients whose pets are also there for sterilization.
Consider this, the nonprofit estimates each animal spayed or neutered prevents an average of six unwanted births in the first breeding season alone.
"Pet overpopulation is the number one cause of death and suffering for cats and dogs," Lucco said.
Their services extend to local rescues and feral cat communities. Wherever the need exists in the region, PetFix is there focused on creating a healthy and manageable pet population.
PetFix relies on community support and does not receive government funding. The 501c3 relies on the generosity of donors to keep services affordable and to continue its lifesaving work.
