WARREN, Ohio — There's nothing like being home for the holidays and spending time with loved ones this time of year.
That goes not just for humans, but pets, too.
Sadly, so many of our kennels and shelters are filled these days with very good dogs, all of them without homes through no fault of their own. We recently heard about three pups volunteers would like to see adopted in time for Christmas.
They are at the Trumbull County Dog Pound in Warren, which is staffed by caring and devoted pet lovers who freely admit tight quarters at the facility don't make for great first impressions. This goes especially for dogs who have some energy to burn and aren't built for cramped spaces.
"We definitely have some great dogs here right now," James Infante, a Trumbull County dog warden, told us.
Infante shared that in its past life, the building served another purpose, but was retrofitted to become a kennel for dogs. As a result, there are animals that would make great companions, but don't show well in a noisy facility and too often are overlooked.
We asked for "speed dates" with three pups who've been here for several months. Meet Dixon, Infinity, and Spot — three males who are ready to couch cuddle on New Year's Eve and more than ready to help you reach your 2024 fitness goals!
Up first: Dixon!
"A Hocking Hills dog, you know?" Infante said of this 50-pound pup. "He might be one of those. A runner, even. Anything you could do to get his energy out."
Dixon would make a great companion for someone who likes to hit the Metroparks and enjoys outdoor adventures. He comes out of the kennel strong, but settles right into the walk after a few minutes.
He is believed to be about 2 years old and knows basic commands. He also loves blueberries, specializes in sloppy kisses, and shows his love with enthusiastic butt wiggles.
Rob, a volunteer, has gotten to know Dixon well, and struggles with why he hasn't gotten much interest yet.
"He's a great dog," Rob stated. "Definitely one of my favorites."
Bachelor No. 2 is Infinity, fresh off a Thanksgiving staycation at a volunteer's home where he earned very high marks for manners and following all house rules! Infinity was so good, he was trusted to have the run of the house while the home's owner was away for a few hours. A real gem indeed.
Infinity is about 2 to 3 years old and is roughly 60 pounds of velcro, ready to attach to his forever person.
"He loves toys, giving kisses, even through the kennel's cage," Infante said. "He's another couch dog."
Last, but not least, we have Spot! He is also a young guy with some weight to throw around at 60-plus pounds. He loves rolling over for some belly rubs and playing fetch, and is perfect as a country dog or city dog. He just needs that person to fall in love with over a jar of creamy peanut butter.
"He could play fetch all day in his fenced yard," Rob described. "He just loves being outside. Definitely a fan favorite here. One of our longest residents."
Spot, Dixon, and Infinity have undergone training at DogSmartz in Warren, where they are star pupils. Now, they're just waiting for someone to make their perfect Christmas wishes come true.
Voices of The Trumbull County Dog Pound is the 501c3 nonprofit volunteer arm that supports the facility. They are in desperate need for more fosters as the facility is full and some dogs are in crates. If you can help, please reach out here.
Additionally, you can earn more about dashing Dixon here, heck out irresistible Infinity by clicking here, and there's something special about Spot here! These three pups are better suited for families with bigger kids, while Dixon and Infinity require meet-and-greets with family dogs. It's believed Spot might be best as an only dog.
In addition to Dixon, Spot, and Infinity there are many other wonderful dogs ready for homes. Please check them out here.
