CLEVELAND — You don’t have to travel far to find a hidden gem.
While COVID-19 may have put a stop to some travel plans, it’s also opened opportunities for people to explore their surroundings.
"Over the last year, we saw record visitation in 2020," said Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman. "We look forward to continuing that in 2021."
There are a number of 'hidden treasures" in the area, according to Zimmerman. Among those is Mill Creek Falls in Cleveland, which is the tallest waterfall in Cuyahoga County.
Ohio's Lake Erie Shores and Islands is also another option for those looking for opportunities to explore. The area is home to indoor waterpark resorts, outdoor hiking and fishing. Bryan Edwards, director of marketing and communications with Lake Erie Shores and Islands, said the area and time of the year make it ideal for bird watching.
"Right now through May is really when the spring migration occurs." Edwards said. "We’ll have hundreds, if not thousands, of varieties of birds come through this region."
To avoid large crowds or busy weekend visits, Pamela Barnes with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park recommends planning a trip during the weekdays if possible. She also suggests stopping by the Boston Mill Visitor Center to talk to a ranger for trip planning ideas and to pick up a Junior Ranger Handbook, which has activities for kids. Due to muddy terrain, Barnes advises to avoid Blue Hen Falls as it may be unsafe.
