COLUMBUS, Ohio — Some Ohio workers are getting a boost in their pay as the state's minimum wage has increased to $10.10 per hour for non-tipped employees. This change, which took effect on Jan. 1, 2023, marks an increase of 80 cents per hour when compared to last year.
The Ohio Department of Commerce defines non-tipped employees as those who don’t “engage in an occupation in which he/she customarily and regularly receives more than $30 per month in tips.”
Employees younger than 16 “shall be paid no less than the current federal minimum wage rate,” which is currently $7.25 per hour.
For tipped employees, the minimum wage has jumped by 40 cents in 2023 to $5.05 per hour.
“Employers electing to use the tip credit provision must be able to show that tipped employees receive at least the minimum wage when direct or cash wages and the tip credit amount are combined," according to the Ohio Department of Commerce.
But there is an exception…
Ohio’s minimum wage applies only to businesses with annual gross receipts of $372,000 or more per year. Businesses making less than that amount are permitted to pay their workers the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
