Ohio sales tax holiday: How you can get a refund if you were mistakenly charged sales taxes

Ohio's annual sales tax holiday began July 30 and continues until Aug. 8.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As Ohio continues its annual sales tax holiday through Aug. 8, what can you do if you're mistakenly charged taxes at the time of purchase? Can you get a refund?

Here's what the Ohio Department of Taxation says:

Retailers should refund tax to any consumer who was charged sales tax on an exempt item during the sales tax holiday. Consumers who were charged tax by a retailer should take their receipt to the retailer for a refund.

You also have the option of filing for a refund directly through the Ohio Department of Taxation. That form is available HERE (you can also see it in the document below). If you're looking for more guidance on getting a refund, here's a checklist as provided by the Ohio Department of Taxation.

Ohio's tax free holiday, which started on July 30, eliminates sales tax on "all tangible personal property" that is $500 or less. This includes in-person and online purchases -- but there are some exceptions as the following are not included: Watercraft, motor vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, vaping products and items containing marijuana.
