RITTMAN — Crews recovered the body of a missing boy near a dam along Chippewa Creek on Monday afternoon.
Officials held a press conference Monday evening after the boy was found. WKYC streamed it on Facebook and you can watch it below:
According to reports, the boy was swimming with friends in Rittman's Chippewa Creek Sunday afternoon when he went under water and didn't come back up. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m.
A woman at the scene named Lori Klump identified the boy as her son, Gavin Griffith. She spoke to WKYC's Amani Abraham.
One of the friends flagged down a motorist that called for help. At that time, officials from Rittman police, fire, and EMS responded to the scene.
Dozens of workers were on scene for what crews called a "rescue" effort. The search had been suspended Sunday night before picking back up Monday.
