AKRON, Ohio — A pair of brothers on Monday was sentenced to life behind bars for their role in two murders last year.
Donyea Tyus, 30, and Orlando Tyus, 28, will serve life without parole for two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and having a weapon under disability.
The killings happened July 7, 2018, when the brothers, along with 21-year-old Cheyenne James, drove around the Akron area with the intent to kill random people. The Summit County Prosecutor's Office says the motive may have been a gang initiation.
The first murder happened in the 600 block of Schiller Avenue, where the trio parked on the street to wait. As brothers Bonn and Conn Rassavong left a house and walked to a parked car, the Tyus brothers got out of their car and began shooting. Orlando Tyus shot Bonn Rassavong several times, while Donyea attempted to shoot Conn Rassavong, but the gun malfunctioned. James remained in the car.
Bonn Rassavong was killed in the shooting.
The trio drove to Arlington Street with plans for Donyea Tyus to kill the next victim, who ended up being 58-year-old Robert McCall. McCall died from his injuries.
The three also lured a woman into an alley, where James attempted to kill her, but the gun malfunctioned again and the victim was unharmed.
James later confessed everything when questioned by police. She pleaded guilty to felonious assault and will be sentenced Aug. 5.
