CLE to LA: Akron clothing entrepreneurs create new designs for LeBron James fans

James' recent decision join the Los Angeles Lakers meant it was time to head back to the drawing board for a pair of local clothing companies.

AKRON — Akron-based clothing designers are coming up with a way to support LeBron James on his new journey to LA -- while also keeping the hometown connection close.

James’ recent decision join the Los Angeles Lakers meant it was time to head back to the drawing board for a pair of local clothing companies.

“It was almost kind of a no brainer to make it,” said Willie Harper, CEO of Not Perfect Clothing Brand in Akron. “No matter what moves he makes, the city is going to support him.”

Harper has designed what he calls the “Los Akronles” t-shirt to mark James’ decision. He’s no stranger to the designing process and even got the attention of James with one of their most popular designs.

His newest design incorporates the colors of the Lakers with the Akron name placed on a basketball. Harper is already receiving preorders for the product that’s expected to be in next week.

“The shirt actually proves that theory that the city is going to support him no matter what,” Harper said.

Frank Miller III and Preston Clark are the co-founders of 7th Floor Clothing in Akron. The duo has teamed up to create shirts, shoes and hats to connect with fans. Their “Kiss the trophy” hat even captured the attention of LeBron James.

“I still get chills about that,” said Miller.

The company has seen growth over the years, including most recently through the city’s “Retail Revival” program launched by eBay.

James’ most recent move has them shipping out their next design.

“This shirt is Akron, through and through,” said Miller. “Shout out to Swensons for allowing us to use their font and then we put the Lakers colors and it’s a hit.”

It’s a business, but both companies note that it’s also about representing hometown pride and the support for James.

“I’m loyal to LeBron. I’m loyal to the soil,” said Miller. “I don’t care if he’s playing in Spokane. I’m making Spokane shirts.”

RockEveryWear Apparel in Akron has also launched their own"LAbron" design and have plans to create additional items in the near future.
