CLEVELAND -- When the Cleveland Indians take the field in 2019, they'll do so with a new look.
On Monday, the Indians unveiled a new alternate uniform, as well as updates to their existing set.
The biggest change to the team's jerseys and caps comes in the removal of Chief Wahoo, which has existed in some form on Cleveland's uniforms since 1948. In January, the Indians and Major League Baseball announced that 2018 would be the final season the team would wear the polarizing red-faced caricature of a Native American.
In addition to the team's current white and gray uniform sets, the Indians' navy uniforms have been updated to include "Cleveland" in block lettering across the chest. The team is also adding a fourth uniform red uniform design for the 2019 campaign, marking the first time since the 1970s that the Indians have worn red as an official uniform.
The Indians will wear their white and red uniforms at home, with the gray and midnight navy threads being reserved for road games.
In addition to their red uniforms, the Indians debuted a new cap on Monday -- a navy hat with a red bill featuring a red block 'C'. The new hat will join the team's all-navy cap with a red block 'C' and will replace the all-red hat with a navy block 'C' the team had worn as an alternate since 2011.
With Cleveland set to host the 2019 MLB All-Star Game, the Indians will wear the exhibition's logo on both their jerseys and caps throughout the entire upcoming season. The team has discussed adding a permanent replacement for Chief Wahoo down the road, although such determination won't be made until 2020 at the earliest.
The 3-time defending American League Central Division champion Indians will open the 2019 season on March 28 on the road against the Minnesota Twins.
