94-year-old North Canton artist proves it's never too late to start something new

Jeanne Wertman has created beautiful art for decades and she has no plans on stopping.

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — A fresh brewed pot of coffee or tea, and a good conversation with her beloved roommate Mary. This is how 94-year-old Jeanne Wertman likes to start her day.

Beyond her cozy kitchen, though, a world of creativity awaits in her craft room.

"These are little booties that I made to give to babies," Jeanne told told us, pointing out her work.

She's made knitted goodies, clay figurines and stunning, beaded jewelry for decades.

"Well, the knitting and crocheting started in the 40s," Jeanne said.

Yet, some of these magnificent, handmade pieces, will never have a price tag.

"I don't know, I don't think I'd sell," Jeanne said. "I'd give, but I won't sell."

Three times a widow, mother of four, great-great grandmother, and a two-time cancer survivor.

"Kidney cancer. Then I had stomach cancer," Jeanne said.

But no matter what life has handed her, art has always been a steady companion.

"My friend," she said of her passion.

She turned to art again, last year, when times got tough.

"That's when I broke my hip," Jeanne told us. "So I had to do something sitting down."

It was time for a new challenge: Jeanne wanted to tackle painting. She watched YouTube tutorials, then started creating her own pieces.

She's completed dozens of beautiful watercolors, but she wants more. You see, painting runs deep in her roots.

"Here's a tool that belonged to my mom. She did oil paintings," Jeanne said.

She's wired to try new things.

"Something in me just makes me want to do it!" Jeanne said.

Just six years shy of a century, she has a message to those who think their time has passed to start something new:

"Oh, it's never too late," she said. "So I'm pushing for a hundred."
