CLEVELAND — The Urban League Guild of Greater Cleveland kicked off a month-long initiative to make sure local children have enough books to read.
The Guild partnered with the McDonalds at East 55th Street and Superior to provide each family ordering Kids Meals with free books for their children.
Every Saturday in April, in partnership with McDonalds owners Geoffrey and Peaches Ledwidge, the Guild will give away books at different locations and engage parents in conversations about reading and literacy.
It’s all part of the Urban League Guild's Building Bridges and Breaking Down Barriers initiative, said Guild President Billy Sharp.
"We view literacy in the city as an important issue. We just went through the pandemic and kids missed out on a year of [in-person] school," Sharp said. And that's why making sure that children have plenty of books to read at home is a priority for the Guild, he explained.
Children's books will be given away between 2:30 and 3:30 pm to McDonalds patrons at the following dates and locations:
April 10: McDonalds at 3782 West 150th St., Cleveland.
April 17: McDonalds at 13705 Euclid Ave., Cleveland.
April 24: McDonalds at 10411 St Clair Ave., Cleveland.
