Construction worker dies in I-71 crash: ODOT official tweets 'Our hearts are broken'

A second construction worker was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center unresponsive.

BROOK PARK, Ohio — Brook Park Police are investigating a deadly crash involving a construction worker.

Emergency crews were called to I-71 South just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a construction truck that was hit near the Brookpark and Snow roads intersection.

One man, a construction worker, was found dead when crews arrived on scene. He has been identified as 61-year-old Rafael Solis of Cleveland.

Another construction worker was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center unresponsive.

Authorities say the suspected driver, an unidentified woman, was arrested in Middleburg Heights. No additional details regarding her arrest were immediately available.

I-71 South was closed for several hours between I-480 and Snow Road, but all lanes have since reopened.

ODOT's press secretary, Matt Bruning, tweeted about the deadly incident early Thursday morning.

"Our hearts are broken," he wrote. "These contractors were simply trying to make our roads better. Last year in Ohio, four highway workers, including @ODOT_Statewide's John Pasko, were killed on the job. Please pay extra attention when you see roadside workers. #MoveOver #SlowDown."
