CLEVELAND — New Philadelphia police arrested a 20-year-old suspect last week on charges that he broke into a bank and left a trail of damage behind.

Guillermo Sanchez Gomez was arrested after an alarm triggered police to respond to the PNC Bank at 245 West High Avenue just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, according to a press release from the New Philadelphia Police Department. Police allege Sanchez Gomez broke into the bank through a door and triggered motion sensors in the lobby and teller areas of the bank. When officers arrested the suspect, police say he had a hammer, a flat-blade screwdriver, a spoon and black plastic trash bags in his possession, and police found a fix blade knife on the floor.

Officers arrived at the bank at 1:10 a.m. and requested assistance from Dover police. Police said officers arrived to find a rear door with a glass panel shattered and a suspect was "observed inside" but "quickly disappeared from view."

Police unlocked the lobby through the damaged door and found Sanchez Gomez, who was ordered to the ground and taken into custody.

Sanchez Gomez is being housed in the Tuscarawas County Jail on felony charges of breaking and entering, safecracking, possessing criminal tools and vandalism.

Police say in addition to the damaged door, Sanchez Gomez is accused of destroying a digital keypad and causing "minor" damage to the door and frame of a bank vault.
