Akron man dies after I-76 shooting in apparent road rage incident; police say suspect fired several gunshots from vehicle

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office says the victim’s vehicle came to a stop after it struck the concrete median.

NORTON, Ohio — A 40-year-old Akron man is dead after a shooting Wednesday afternoon along I-76 East near Route 21 in Norton.

The incident happened around 5:35 p.m. as authorities say the man was traveling eastbound on the interstate when the suspect in another vehicle “fired several gunshots at the victim’s vehicle.”

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office says the victim’s vehicle came to a stop after it struck the concrete median.

The victim -- identified as George Jensen -- was then taken to an Akron hospital with an apparent gunshot wound where he later died from his injuries at 6:14 p.m.

"Before the shooting, there appeared to be a road rage incident between the victim and another driver in a black 2018 or newer Chevy Camaro as the two traveled on Interstate 76," according to the Norton Police Department. "The driver of the Camaro fired multiple gunshots toward the victim's car as it drove past."

Police say the Camaro's driver was last seen leaving the area on I-76 East.

ODOT assisted with the temporary closure of I-76 while officers processed the crime scene.

Anybody with information or witnessed the incident is asked to call the Norton Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-706-0084.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the Jensen family.
