AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating after a 47-year-old bicyclist was struck by a car and left critically injured on Friday.
In new details released early Tuesday morning, the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office says the victim -- identified as Jimmy Fletcher of Akron -- died from his injuries at 8:30 p.m. Monday night.
Akron police say the incident happened around 4 p.m. at the area of South Arlington Street and Ray Street. When officers arrived, they found the victim on the ground unconscious. He was taken to Summa Health Akron City Hospital by EMS.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was on a bicycle going northbound on S. Arlington Street when he was struck by what was reported as a white sedan that turned onto Ray Street. Police say after striking the victim, the driver of the sedan left the scene.
Investigators are working to locate the vehicle and identify the driver involved in the incident. The victim’s name is being withheld pending further investigation and notifications.
