AKRON, Ohio — A 59-year-old man wanted in connection with a murder in Michigan was take into custody in Akron after setting himself on fire during a traffic stop.
According to a release from the Akron Police Department, officers received multiple alerts and notifications from the Flock License Plate Reader system about a blue Hyundai Tucson wanted in connection with a Michigan homicide on Sunday night and into Monday morning.
At 11 a.m., officers found the vehicle going eastbound on Copley Road and conducted what police officials called a "high-risk traffic stop" in the parking lot of A&A Beauty Supply in the 1300 block of Copley Road.
Akron police say officers "cautiously" approached the Tucson at gunpoint and give the driver verbal commands to turn off the car and drop the knife he had in his hand. Moments later, police witnessed the suspect set himself on fire while still seated in the car. The suspect jumped out of the car and was taken into custody. Officers put out small flames inside the care with a fire extinguisher.
EMS was immediately called to the scene for the suspect, who sustained various burn injuries. He was later transported to Akron Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
