AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department says its investigators are working around the clock to identify and locate the suspects responsible for shooting at an officer during a chase on Friday evening.
In a release, Akron police say the incident began at approximately 11:17 p.m., when an officer parked on S. Arlington Street and E. Archwood Avenue in a marked cruiser heard a gunshot.
Seconds later, the officer observed a silver Chrysler Pacifica speed past him southbound at an estimated 80 miles per hour. The officer pursued the Pacifica and caught up with it at Reed Avenue and Clement Street.
Police say after the vehicle turned northbound onto Clement, it stopped and appeared to have waited for the officer to get closer. Then, someone from inside the Pacifica fired multiple shots at the officer and sped off.
When the officer activated his lights and siren to begin pursuing the suspects, someone on the passenger side of the Pacifica fired additional shots at him.
Officers eventually lost sight of the suspect vehicle on Kelly Avenue near Wyley Avenue.
Akron police report that neither the officer or his cruiser were struck by the gunfire. However, bullets struck a parked car and at least one nearby residence in the 1000 block of Clement Street. There were no immediate reports of injuries to anyone inside the home.
Evidence was collected at the scene and will be processed, along with the Chrysler Pacifica which has been recovered as of Monday.
