1 man dead after shooting in Akron

No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.

AKRON, Ohio — One man is dead after a shooting in Akron Tuesday evening.

At approximately 6 p.m., Akron officers responded to a call of gunshots heard in the 800 block of Haynes Street. When officers arrived to the scene, they found a 32-year-old man in a vehicle, unresponsive.

The victim was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Summit County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as Martel Tatum of Akron. 

Based on an initial investigation of the incident by Akron police, one or more unknown suspects opened fire and struck Tatum as he pulled into the driveway of a residence. The suspects fled the scene after the incident.

Shell casings from the weapon were recovered from the scene.

A short time after the incident, a residence in the 400 block of West Bartges Street was struck by gunfire as well as an uninvolved parked car. None of the occupants inside the house were injured. 

Authorities have not indicated whether these two incidents are related at this time.

No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified in the shooting.
