CLEVELAND — A suspect who allegedly shot and kidnapped a woman in Akron was captured following a chase that ended on I-480 in Cleveland on Friday.
According to Akron police officials, officers were called to the North Side Saloon on East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue at 11 a.m. amid reports that a man had a gun, shots were fired, and a female had been shot.
A witness told Akron police that the suspect got into a black pickup truck, forced the woman to join him, and fled from the scene.
"A short time later, patrol officers found the vehicle near Linden Ave and E. Cuyahoga Falls Ave. Officers activated their lights and sirens to conduct an investigatory stop. The truck failed to stop, and a lengthy pursuit ensued," Akron police described in a release.
The suspect made his way into Cleveland and was pursued by law enforcement from several agencies. As the chase was progressing, Akron police say negotiators spoke with the man and woman on the phone "to peacefully conclude the pursuit and get the female medical treatment."
The pursuit finally came to an end with a crash on I-480 westbound at Tiedeman Road at approximately 1 p.m.
Video footage provided by the Ohio Department of Transportation showed police performing a PIT maneuver after the truck's tires appeared to have been flattened.
The 39-year-old suspect was taken into custody without incident, according to police. Meanwhile, the 38-year-old woman was taken to a Cleveland-area hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Akron police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
