BEDFORD, Ohio — Police in Bedford are investigating after a high school student was struck in the back of his head near the football stadium on Monday afternoon.
Bedford High School Principal Khalisha Lewis informed families that at around 2:40 p.m., school leaders were informed that an unknown adult was on school grounds with a possible weapon. Bedford police says its school resource officer was dispatched to the stadium building for a call of an injured student.
The student told police he was struck in the back of his head with a gun, causing a laceration. The suspect has been identified as LaQuan Evans, who apparently left the scene in a dark-colored SUV. A rescue squad was requested to treat the student's injuries. The student's mother also arrived at the scene and transportation to the hospital was refused.
Bedford police say Evans, a former student at the high school, faces charges of felonious assault and illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon on school grounds.
Following the incident, Lewis sent out the following call to BHS families:
"I am calling to inform you about an incident that occurred near the stadium after school. At around 2:40 this afternoon we were informed that an unknown adult was on school grounds with a possible weapon. Police and security were immediately notified and able to quickly get to the scene. Upon arrival the unknown adult was already off school premises. With the cooperation of Bedford Police Department and our High School Security Team we were able to secure the school grounds. All after school activities have been cancelled at this time. Due to this being a pending investigation, no further information can be provided at this time."
