AKRON, Ohio — The Wooster man accused of stealing a truck with a 2-year-old boy inside, triggering an Amber Alert one week ago, has been indicted on several felony charges.
A Wayne County grand jury indicted 54-year-old Larry Spence on charges of kidnapping, abduction, and grand theft of a motor vehicle. Spence's next court appearance has not yet been scheduled, however prosecutors are asking that he be held without bond.
The indictment comes as the Akron Police Department has released new body and dash camera video showing the moments surrounding the rescue of the child and the arrest of Spence.
The Amber Alert on March 1 came after the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported a Black 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was taken from the Marshallville Dollar General with a juvenile in the back seat sleeping. That incident happened at around 2:11 p.m., with the alert going out approximately 30 minutes later.
Akron police say they received a call to assist in the search for the truck at around 3:12 p.m. Utilizing the Flock camera license plate reader, officers received two alerts in three minutes to help pinpoint the location of the child and the suspect in Akron's Kenmore neighborhood.
Just after 3:30 p.m., an Akron police officer spotted the truck near East Avenue and Florida Avenue, finding the boy in his car seat.
"It's okay," the officer tells the child. "Here, I'm going to take you out. It's okay. Let's get you out of here."
The officer offered the child water, food, toys and books to make him feel more comfortable.
Meanwhile, police continued the search for the suspect, surrounding a building next to where the child was found. Video shows officers moving in with their guns drawn. The suspect wasn't inside.
Spence was arrested roughly a half mile from where the child was located. He was brought back to the scene and placed inside a police car.
While Spence was being detained, first responders continued to console the emotional child.
"You're alright. You're a brave boy. We're going to get you home to your daddy," the boy was told. "We're going to get you to your parents. We're the good guys.
