Police: Canton murder suspect arrested after jumping from window

The Canton Police Department says the victim, who was identified as 52-year-old Gary Marx of Alliance, died at the hospital.

CANTON, Ohio — A 22-year-old murder suspect is being treated at a local hospital after Canton police say he was hurt when jumping out of a second-story window “in an attempt to flee from officers.”

The situation started around 5 a.m. Monday when officers with the Canton Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the 900 block of Dueber Avenue SW.

That’s where officers found a 52-year-old man laying near the entrance at that address. He was unresponsive from an apparent gunshot wound to the neck, police said.

The victim, identified as Gary Marx of Alliance, was taken to Aultman Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 5:27 a.m.

After reviewing evidence, detectives then identified the suspect as Jamarri Harper. The Canton SWAT team and detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 800 block of Dueber Avenue SW where authorities say Harper was apprehended after jumping from the window.

You can see surveillance video of the pursuit of Harper below:

Harper faces charges of murder, felonious assault, aggravated robbery, having weapons under disability and receiving stolen property, according to the Canton Police Department.

Police note that Harper is also wanted in Cuyahoga County on unrelated warrants for aggravated robbery, two counts of robbery, two counts of abduction, grand theft auto, aggravated theft and failure to comply with law enforcement – all of which Canton police say include firearm specifications.

Anybody with information is asked to call the Canton Police Detective Bureau at 330-489-3144. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
