CANTON, Ohio — A Canton teen will serve more than a decade behind bars after admitting to a shooting at a birthday party last spring.
Anton J. Nash, 16, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of felonious assault. Stark County Common Pleas Judge Taryn Heath then sentenced him to 12-15 years in prison.
Back on April 29, 2023, Nash fired a gun into a crowd celebrating a birthday at the American Legion on Cleveland Avenue Northwest. Two teens were shot, but survived their injuries, and Nash was arrested at the scene.
Nash was just 15 at the time of the incident, but authorities chose to try him as an adult. Because of this, 3News is identifying him even though he is still a minor.
"The goal of the criminal justice system is at some point defendants will take responsibility for their actions," Stark County Prosecuting Attorney Kyle L. Stone said in a statement. "Mr. Nash held himself accountable to the charges and will now have at least 12 years to contemplate his actions."
