GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Authorities in Garfield Heights are asking for the public’s help after an 8-year-old girl was struck by a stray bullet while laying in bed last month.
It was around 1 a.m. on March 19 when Nyairra Green was shot in the eye by an unknown suspect, according to Crime Stoppers. It happened in the 9300 block of Grand Division Avenue.
"Investigation shows a shot was fired from a gun, which ricocheted off the front porch pillar," Crime Stoppers explained. "The shot went into the bedroom where Nyairra was located. The bullet entered above Nyairra's right eye. Emergency personnel transported Nyairra to MaryMount Hospital and later transported her to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital."
Nyairra's mother Shernisha Chaney told 3News the bullet ended up lodged in her daughter's brain, and that doctor's declined to remove it out of fear of doing more damage by doing so. Right now, Nyairra's family is just happy to have her home safe.
"She was shot with a 9 mm in the face," Chaney said, "so for her to still be here able to play with dolls, able to say 'Good morning mommy,' able to do everything she's always done is nothing short of a miracle."
A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the identity and prosecution of the person responsible. Anybody with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 216-252-7463. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
