CLEVELAND — It was a violent Fourth of July holiday weekend across Northeast Ohio, as police in Cleveland and Akron are investigating multiple shootings that left several dead.
Looking at numbers from Friday, June 30 through the very early hours of July 5, 28 different shooting incidents are being investigated between both the Cleveland Division of Police and the Akron Police Department.
Akron police told 3News that from Friday through Tuesday, they investigated 12 different shooting incidents, with eight people being shot. One of those victims would die from their injuries.
Meanwhile in Cleveland, a total of 16 shootings are being investigated.
Cleveland police reported one person was shot on Friday, seven on Saturday, six on Sunday, and six on Monday. There were five victims of gunfire on July 4 and the early hours of July 5.
Over the course of those days, five people would die from their gunshot injuries in Cleveland, all being investigated as homicides.
The Cleveland Division of Police has also shared how many homicides have happened with a firearm from the start of the year up through June 24. From January 1 to June 24, 2023, there have been 79, which is 41% more than last year up to that same point, when there were 56 people killed with firearms.
