Cleveland man shot to death by nephew at birthday party; suspect claims he didn't know gun was loaded

The matter remains under investigation.

CLEVELAND — A 25-year-old man is dead following an incident in Cleveland's Corlett neighborhood early Sunday morning.

According to police, Emeir T. Ragland was celebrating his birthday at the house on the 13300 block of Benwood Avenue when he was shot in the chest around 2:30 a.m. EMS crews arrived on scene, but Ragland died before he could even be taken to a hospital.

Homicide detectives say Ragland's nephew, who has not yet been identified, was the one who shot him. The suspects claims he was handling the weapon and thought it was unloaded when he pulled the trigger. Nevertheless, he was arrested and is currently at the Cuyahoga County Jail.

This matter remains under investigation.
