CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police has released the name of the officer who was fatally shot on Rocky River Drive in Cleveland Friday night.
According to Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia, 25-year-old Shane Bartek was off-duty when he was shot and killed during an aggravated robbery on Dec. 31. Bartek joined the Cleveland Division of Police in August 2019 and was currently assigned to the Fifth District on Cleveland's east side.
On Saturday morning, officials confirmed that two suspects are currently in police custody in connection to Bartek's death.
An initial investigation revealed that the incident, which began around 6 p.m. on Friday occurred after a suspect approached Bartek in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Rocky River Drive. The suspect brandished a firearm and a struggle ensued. Bartek was then shot twice and the suspect fled in the officer's vehicle.
Bartek was transported to Fairview Hospital by Cleveland EMS but was later pronounced deceased.
After a pursuit involving several different law enforcement agencies, Bartek's vehicle was recovered and a man was taken into custody. A woman was also arrested in connection to the incident.
This matter remains under investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police. At this time, charges have not been filed against the two individuals.
