Man taken into FBI custody after allegedly robbing Elyria pawn shop at gunpoint

The incident happened on June 16 at the Cash Land Pawn Shop.

A man has been arrested and charged in connection to a pawn shop robbery that took place in Elyria on June 16. 

According to the FBI, Dewayne J. O’Neal robbed the Cash Land Pawn Shop on Abbe Road in June, and held a store employee at gunpoint during the incident.

Police responded to the scene at the time of the robbery and the store clerk told officials that the man, now identified as O'Neal, pretended to be at the store pawning an Apple laptop, before pulling out a weapon and handing over a note that said, “All the money in the register or I will shoot you and run.” 

Following the incident, O'Neal was identified as a possible suspect and was later located at the Economy Inn & Suites in North Randall, and was taken into custody without incident. 

Inside of O'Neal's room and vehicle, officers found a loaded semiautomatic rifle and an Ak-47, both of which he admitted to owning.

On Wednesday, O'Neal was taken into federal custody by the FBI and will be seen at an undetermined time by U.S. Magistrate Judge William H. Baughman. 

The man has been charged with interference with commerce by threats or violence, and use of a firearm in connection with a crime of violence.
