'It's so insane': Downtown Cleveland residents voice concern following overnight car break-ins

Cleveland police detectives are investigating more than a dozen car break-ins at apartment complexes along West 9th Street in the Warehouse District.

CLEVELAND — Detectives with the Cleveland Division of Police are investigating a rash of car break-ins that left multiple downtown residents in the Warehouse District with significant vehicle damage Monday morning.

A spokesperson for the Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) says they got their first call at around 4:00 a.m. Monday reporting a car break-in at the parking lot between the Bingham and Archer Apartment complexes.

The lot is operated and owned by a third party, LAZ parking, and cars park above ground.

When an officer arrived, CDP says the officer counted 11 vehicles still in that lot with damage.

Residents say the break-ins are unsettling from a public safety standpoint and frustrating when it comes to the financial burden.

“I mean it’s definitely unfortunate. You know, living in a place like this, we pay a lot of rent, said Conor Smith, a resident of the Bingham Apartments. "We wanna make sure we’re safe and taken care of so it is unfortunate that you can’t, you gotta be careful of those things.”

A few yards away is the parking lot for the Archer Apartments, where cars were also hit overnight.

A video taken by one resident reveals broken glass and cars with shattered windows throughout the Archer Apartment parking lot.

According to CDP, detectives are focused on the incident due to the sheer volume of cars hit. They say it's a priority for them due to the scale of the crime.

We asked the team at the Archer Apartment complex whether they had security camera footage of the incident, whether they were working with police and what they were doing to support residents.

They told us they would not provide comment at this time.

Police say they do not have suspects at this time. They're urging the public to come forward with any information, big or seemingly small. They say any tip could help them close this case.

If you know something about the break-ins, call the Cleveland Division of Police at 216-623-5318.
