SULLIVAN, Ohio — A child has been airlifted to the hospital after the Ohio State Highway Patrol says they were hit by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bicycle Friday afternoon.
Officials say the child was riding the bike on County Road 681 in Sullivan Township when they were struck by a Chevrolet Silverado headed south towards Township Road 350 just before 3:40 p.m. The child, whose name and age have not been released, was taken by helicopter to Akron Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The suspect has been identified as 55-year-old James Dwayne Taylor, of Ashland. He remained at the scene of the crash and was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, and authorities say additional charges could be pending.
An investigation from OSHP and the Ashland County Sheriff's Office is underway.
