EUCLID, Ohio — Euclid police have given more details following an incident that involved one officer shooting a suspect before an eventual chase and crash on Interstate 90.
According to the department, multiple officers were investigating a hit-skip early Wednesday morning when they heard gunshots from the Midway Bar & Grille on Lakeland Boulevard. The officers rushed to the scene and ordered a man standing in the back parking lot to stop, but he then got into a car and drove towards a police cruiser with its lights on.
Following a brief stop, the man allegedly "rapidly accelerated his vehicle toward an Officer who was on foot in the driveway area." The officer fired multiple gunshots at the car before jumping out of the way, uninjured, while the suspect sped away.
Officials claim the suspect then drove the wrong way on Lakeland before heading westbound in the I-90 eastbound lanes. Police chased him parallel westbound for two miles before the vehicle went over the median and hit a guard rail before finally stopping.
Medical attention was given to the suspect before EMS crews took him to a local hospital. Among his injuries was a gunshot wound suffered during the earlier encounter in the parking lot.
Authorities say the chase led to a crash on I-90 that left an innocent person injured as well. That person was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Per protocol, the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been called in to lead the inquiry.
