LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — A former deputy with the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office was indicted this week on felony theft charges after he allegedly took money while at the scene of a death investigation.
Authorities say the incident took place last Friday on July 15 when a family member of the deceased made an allegation that money was missing from the residence.
“A sergeant on scene took information for a theft report and it was quickly determined that only one deputy had been alone in the room from where the money was allegedly taken,” the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday morning.
After an investigation began on the theft complaint, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office says former deputy Dylan Hazzard confessed to an investigator “and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash.”
Hazzard was booked in the Lorain County Jail, but released on his own recognizance.
He was also terminated and relieved of duty on Wednesday. He worked with the department for nearly one year after being hired back on Aug. 5, 2021.
The indictment shows Hazzard's arraignment hearing has tentatively been scheduled for July 28 at 8:45 a.m.
The incident remains under investigations.
