CLEVELAND — A fugitive wanted for several charges, including dog fighting, has been apprehended by the US Marshals' Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.
Ronald Smith was arrested on Tuesday morning at 11:15 a.m. by US Marshals at the Residence Inn on Arlington Ridge East in Akron.
Smith was wanted by the United States Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for Conspiracy to Distribute and Possess a Controlled Substance, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Possess and Train a Dog for Purposes of Animal Fighting.
Smith was charged with a 22-count indictment, including dog fighting, drug trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm.
Numerous dogs were seized from residences in Akron that were associated with Smith, who is suspected of playing a role in a larger dog fighting ring.
According to the indictment, officials recovered eight pit-bull-like dogs from his residence on Fultz Street and another seven pit-bull-like dogs from Smith's Herman Avenue residence.
At this time, the case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General (USDA OIG), Akron Police Department and the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
