GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Police in Garfield Heights have announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a man outside a Dunkin' Donuts less than two weeks ago.

Officials say Waunyae Arrington, 29, was taken into custody Tuesday in Columbus. He has since been charged with murder and is currently being held in the Cuyahoga County Jail on a $10 million bond.

Authorities believe the Cleveland native Arrington shot and killed 32-year-old José Ervin Jr., of Maple Heights, early on the morning of Oct. 4 near the Dunkin' on Turney Road in Garfield Heights. In an interview with 3News' Mitti Hicks, Ervin's family theorized that Ervin asked two women he knew for a cigarette before a man with the women, allegedly Arrington, shot him.

"It's been hell, it has, because it's like my worst nightmare come to reality," Ervin's widow Scierra, who shared twins with Ervin and is currently pregnant with their third child, said. "This is my biggest fear, and I'm forced to live in it."

In Cuyahoga County, records show Arrington has a criminal history dating back to 2018, with prior convictions for weapons charges and robbery and most recently an 18-month prison sentence that began in 2021. His next court date has not been set.
