Gunman in Arkansas grocery store shooting charged with 4 counts of murder

Here's what we know about Travis Posey, the gunman who killed four people at a grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Four people are dead and several more were injured at an Arkansas town's grocery store on Friday after a gunman began shooting at people.

Here is what we know so far about 44-year-old Travis Posey, the suspected gunman in the mass shooting:

The shooting began around 11:38 a.m. on June 21 when Posey began shooting at the Mad Butcher, a grocery store in Fordyce. Around 3,200 people live in the small town, which is roughly an hour south of Little Rock.

During the shooting spree, Posey at some point exchanged gunfire with police before he was taken into custody.

Four people would tragically die with another seven people injured from the shooting. Two officers were also injured in the shootout but are expected to recover.

The four people who died are 23-year-old Callie Weems, 50-year-old Roy Sturgis, 62-year-old Shirley Taylor, and 81-year-old Ellen Shrum.

Posey, who is from New Edinburg, will be charged with four counts of capital murder and additional charges are pending. He was also injured after exchanging gunfire with police.

He is currently being held at the Ouachita County Detention Center.

Posey was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and a pistol. He also had a bandolier that held dozens of extra shotgun rounds. Police also believe most, if not all, of the rounds were fired from the shotgun.

While officials have yet to announce any motive for the shooting, investigators are working to learn more. However, they have said that Posey had no obvious known connection to any of the victims nor to the grocery store.

Arkansas State Police held a press conference at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2024, to update the public on the deadly shooting. To view the complete press conference, please see the attached video below.
