INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Independence Police Chief Robert Butler confirmed 25 car break-ins and two car thefts at various city hotels this week.
The Courtyard by Marriott and LaQuinta Inn on Rockside Road have all seen these incidents happen during the overnight hours beginning on Monday.
Butler says all of the individual break-ins have a few key elements in common.
“They are crimes of opportunity,” said Butler. “In many cases, cars were unlocked, or people left items in their cars that were visible externally, and the cars were broken into.”
Butler also confirmed to 3News that no arrests have been made and no injuries have been reported from the incidents. He says at this time, it is too soon to tell if all of the incidents are connected.
Unfortunately, none of the Rockside Road hotels in which these break-ins and thefts took place currently use outside surveillance cameras.
“It’s frustrating,” said Butler. “Our economic development team has met with the hotels to explain the importance of surveillance cameras, but they have not listened to our recommendations,” he said.
Police told 3News on Thursday that one of the two stolen cars was recovered in Garfield Heights.
