AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County jury has convicted an Akron man in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy last spring.

Twenty-year-old D'Lawrence Scott was found guilty of murder along with felonious assault with a gun and improperly discharging a firearm. He had been arrested in May of 2022 for killing Jerry Davis, and his father is also accused of helping him cover up his crimes.

According to police and prosecutors, Scott was involved in an argument with his pregnant girlfriend during the late afternoon of May 24 and hit her in the face. Davis, the woman's brother, attempted to intervene when Scott's father Lawrence arrived to pick up Scott and Scott's two children, but after he put his kids in the car, Scott grabbed a gun and shot Davis in the chest.

The teen victim died later that day, while father and son Scott fled the area. U.S. Marshals captured them two days later in Cleveland.

Lawrence Scott, 52, remains charged with obstruction of justice and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 16 for a pretrial hearing. Meanwhile, Judge Tammy O'Brien will sentence D'Lawrence Scott on Feb. 17 at 9 a.m., and the convicted murder faces up to life in prison.
