Man dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound using Ashtabula deputy's gun

According the the deputy, the suspect was resisting as the officer was trying to detain him. During the altercation, the suspect was able to obtain the deputies gun.

ASHTABULA, Ohio — A man is dead after shooting himself using a deputy's gun over the weekend.

The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident that occurred on Saturday, August 1.

According the press release, deputies were called to Shadyside Drive at 2:40 p.m. for a report of an unwanted male at a residence. The male had fled into the woods after kicking out a bathroom window at the person's house.  

A deputy caught up with the suspect while pursuing him near Gore Road. According the the deputy, the suspect was resisting as the officer was trying to detain him.  

During the altercation, the suspect was able to obtain the deputies holstered weapon.

The suspect then ran to the other side of the vehicle and shot himself. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Saybrook Township Fire Department paramedics.    

The homeowner told police that the suspect was in his driveway with "an altered mental status."  The man then invited the suspect into his house when the suspect began asking questions about firearms in the home. That's when the suspect asked to use the bathroom and then kicked the window out before running into the woods. 

Video evidence of the incident was obtained by detectives during their investigation. 

No other injuries were reported.
