MANSFIELD, Ohio — The Mansfield Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding the man wanted for attempted murder in an incident that took place early Sunday.
In a news release shared on its Facebook page, police say they responded to a call about a shooting at the Moto-Mart convenience store on West 4th Street just before 3 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found 31-year-old Kenneth D. Norris shot in the head.
Norris was taken to an area hospital for surgery. There is no word on his condition.
According to their preliminary investigation, Mansfield police believe the suspect in this case, identified as 29-year-old Michael Childress, approached Norris and an unknown female in the parking lot of the convenience store. Officers say Childress smacked the female across the face, then pistol-whipped Norris to the ground before shooting him in the head. Childress is believed to have fled the scene with another unknown woman in a white SUV, which was later recovered by police.
Mansfield police now believe Childress is traveling in a white 2006 Kia Sportage with Ohio license plate JAE5836. He is wanted for attempted murder and police say he is also a person of interest in at least one other shooting incident that resulted in a head wound in the past two weeks.
Police emphasize that Childress is armed and dangerous. If seen, do not approach - call 911 or contact local law enforcement. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Mansfield Division of Police Major Crimes Unit at 419-755-9724.
