Massive safe containing $3,000 stolen from Cuyahoga County Justice Center cafeteria

Police have no suspects at this time.

CLEVELAND — The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's office is investigating a bizarre case of alleged theft after a large safe was apparently stolen from the cafeteria of the Justice Center in Cleveland.

According to a county spokesperson as well as other officials, a manager from the food service the center contracts came in around 6:30 a.m. Monday and found broken glass on the door of his office. When he entered, the safe was gone.

The doors of the cafeteria were still locked when the manager got in. While nothing has been confirmed, authorities believe this may have been an "inside job," and are currently reviewing security footage and key card records.

The safe apparently weighs 400 pounds and roughly $3,000 was inside. Due to its massive size, deputies are investigating the possibility that the safe is still somewhere in the building with the money gone.

Among other things, the Justice Center houses the Cleveland Division of Police, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's and Prosecutors Offices, and the county jail. The cafeteria is closed on weekends, and police believe the safe was likely taken sometime between closing Friday and the manager's arrival this morning.
