DETROIT — The Scioto County Sheriff's Office says a Michigan inmate who was improperly released in Ohio is back in custody.

The sheriff's office announced Sunday on social media that 31-year-old Talleon S. Brazil, of Detroit, was arrested on Saturday by police in Michigan. Brazil was arrested without incident on warrants from both Ohio and Michigan.

Authorities had been searching for Brazil, who was recently transferred to Ohio to face drug charges, but was improperly released in Scioto County after posting a $50,000 bond on Jan. 21.

Brazil has served about 10 years of a minimum 15-year sentence for carjacking and other crimes in the Detroit area.

The Corrections Department released him to Ohio authorities to face drug charges that were pending in Scioto County. Brazil was supposed to be locked up while in Ohio and then returned to Michigan at the end of the case, said Chris Gautz, a spokesman at the Michigan Corrections Department.

“We’re not sure where the breakdown was,” Gautz said.

Brazil appeared in Scioto County Common Pleas Court on Thursday, Jan. 16 and was appointed legal counsel. The sheriff's office says Brazil pleaded not guilty to all criminal charges and his bond was set at $50,000.

According to the sheriff's office, after posting bond, Brazil was released from the Scioto County Jail by a corrections officer who did notice that Michigan officials had placed a holder on him. This means Brazil was supposed to be released back to Michigan authorities.

The sheriff's office says an internal investigation will take place to determine what led to Brazil's release. Officials also say once the investigation is complete, all employees found to be responsible for the error will be subject to discipline.
