Who killed Amy Mihaljevik?
That question will once again be explored this Sunday in a new cable show.
It is the first in a 5-part series titled “The Lake Erie Murders.” Other episodes involve crimes in Erie, Buffalo and Ontario.
“Alley of Death,” the story of Cleveland teen Gloria Pointer, airs Sunday January 13th. Pointer was just 14-years-old in 1984 when she was raped and murdered on her way to school.
The Mihaljevik case launched one of the largest search and rescue operations in FBI history when the 10-year old went missing in 1989 from a shopping center in Bay Village.
Her body was found months later in a rural field and her story was featured on "America's Most Wanted."
This latest episode promises new evidence using groundbreaking technology and follows a podcast this fall as well as a book written by local journalist James Renner.
Renner appears in the new documentary and recently told Channel 3 News that genealogists could soon link hair found on the girl’s body to her killer.
“Women in California figured out a way to take a suspect’s DNA and plug it into genealogy sights and what you can find is the suspect’s like second or third cousin who might have uploaded their data into '23AndMe' or 'Ancestry.com,'" Renner said.
He believes answers could come within a year.
“Bay Village is going to solve this case--and soon,” Renner said. “They’ve got the DNA, they’ve got this new technique.”
Next year will mark 30 years since Amy was last seen alive.
Sunday’s special will also include interviews with women whose stories are like Amy’s and who chose to remain anonymous until now out of fear their abductor was out there.
It will also explore other child murders in the area to see whether there could be connections.
