NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio — A middle school student in New Philadelphia was taken into custody on Thursday after being found with a gun and ammunition on campus.
Administrators at Welty Middle School contacted the New Philadelphia Police Department at around 2:30 p.m. with a report that a firearm was found in a student's backpack. School officials told police that a student told the school's principal about the presence of the gun. The backpack was confiscated by the school, while the student was taken to an office.
A search of the backpack revealed the presence of a gun and magazines containing ammunition. New Philadelphia police took the student into custody and charges are pending. Police add that there have been no known reports of any threats made against any student or staff member.
