ERIE COUNTY, OHIO, Ohio — An investigation is underway after a fatal crash on the Ohio Turnpike killed a woman and seriously injured four others in Erie County.
Ohio State Highway Patrol officials say the crash happened Friday night at around 7:31 p.m. in Oxford Township when a 30-year-old man driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee went off the right side of the road, striking a guardrail and ending up in the center lane.
In an attempt to get off the roadway, all five occupants of the Jeep got out of the vehicle, but a semi-truck driver struck them on the Ohio Turnpike.
26-year-old Effie Carder of Corry, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 30-year-old driver, as well as a 4-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were taken by LifeCare EMS to Firelands Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the crash.
Officials say the Ohio Turnpike was closed westbound for nearly three hours while the crash was investigated.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Groton Township Fire Department, LifeCare EMS, Interstate Towing, and Ohio Turnpike Maintenance.
At this time, the crash remains under investigation.
