CLEVELAND, Ohio — It’s been one year since a woman was killed while walking her dog at a west side park.
Family, friends and neighbors gathered at McGowan Park to remember 58-year-old Sheila Wallace and pray for justice.
“It makes me uneasy just knowing this is where she took her last breath, knowing that she died alone on the ground here, it’s just not a happy memory,” cries Wallace’s daughter, Katie Wallace.
She says the support from the community one year after her mother’s death is “a beautiful thing.”
West 130th block watch was formed in the days following Sheila’s death to bring a sense of safety back to the neighborhood.
“My mom would be so thrilled by it, she was all about making this neighborhood a happening place again,” she says.
“And I think to know that her death brought that sense of community, I think she’d be really touched by that.”
One man pleaded during the vigil, “you see something, say something cause somebody knows something.”
Katie says a $5,000 reward is being offered in this case. She says it was a random shooting that took the life of her best friend.
“She was a force, she loved God, she loved people.”
Sheila was an administrative assistant for the Cleveland Clinic’s Heart and Vascular Institute.
She leaves behind two grown children as well as grandchildren.
