DAYTON, Ohio — A Dayton police officer who was shot while serving a warrant Monday night has died.
Chief Richard Biehl announced Det. Jorge DelRio passed away Thursday afternoon. DelRio was shot while serving a drug-related warrant for the DEA.
He had entered a home on Ruskin Road and was starting down some basement stairs when he was wounded. Due to the severity of his injuries, a fellow officer rushed DelRio to the hospital in a police cruiser.
Four adults and one juvenile were secured at the shooting scene, according to police. Those adults are in the Montgomery County Jail and facing felony drug charges.
Authorities also recovered three weapons—each with 30 round magazines—cash, fentanyl and marijuana.
The suspected shooter has been identified as Nathan Goddard, police say. He is charged with felonious assault on an agent. Two other adults are facing drug conspiracy charges.
DelRio was a 30-year veteran of the Dayton Police Department and had been with the DEA task force since 2000.
On Thursday afternoon, Governor Mike DeWine ordered that all U.S. and Ohio flags around Dayton be lowered to half-staff in honor of DelRio.
"Fran and I send our deepest condolences to the DelRio family, and the Dayton Police Department on the death of Detective DelRio," Gov. DeWine said. "He leaves a distinguished legacy of service to his community."
According to the Dayton Police Department, viewing for Detective Del Rio will be Monday, November 11, 2019 from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at the University of Dayton Arena. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 12 at the University of Dayton Arena from 12:00-2:00 p.m.
The final salute will be after the funeral service in the lot of the arena. There will be no graveside service.
