CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — For weeks, downtown Cleveland and nearby suburbs have been plagued by a rash of car break-ins.
We saw surveillance video captured on West 10th Street in the Flats on February 4. A man takes a peek inside cars before eventually breaking in.
Sunday night, dozens more became victims on the city's east side. Cars outside a senior living facility in University Circle and near condominiums in Cleveland Heights were targeted.
The Cleveland Heights Police Department tells 3News that 46 vehicles in all were damaged overnight. Some had property stolen.
In a popular area atop Cedar Hill, residents woke up to find their cars had been broken into.
"It didn't happen to every single car," one resident told 3News. "And it doesn't appear that robbery, at all, is a motive. I had some money in my glove compartment."
And whomever did this was especially brazen, committing the crimes within a stone's throw away from several Cleveland Heights Police Department cameras in a lot that sits right behind popular Cedar Road hangouts like 'Nighttown.'
Unfortunately, residents are left to clearn up the mess that's left behind while waiting for insurance companies to settle claims.
Victims of crimes they can't control.
Even if you park in well-lit areas or places that have security cameras, obviously, you can still be a victim. However, you can keep things from being worse by keeping your valuables inside with you instead of inside your car.
